In a breathtaking display, Zimbabwean artist Kresiah Mukwazhi has captivated audiences at Art Basel in Switzerland with her monumental installation, "Nyenyedzi nomwe" (The Seven Sisters Pleiades), Bra straps on canvas, 2024. The 26-foot-long masterpiece, constructed from over a thousand elastic straps, fabric, and clasps sourced from used bras, serves as a powerful commentary on the plight of sex workers in Harare.
Mukwazhi's work stands as a bold challenge to the patriarchal systems that ruthlessly constrain the female body. The installation invokes the mythological narrative of the Pleiades constellation, known in Greek mythology as the seven sisters who were transformed into stars to evade rape. Through this symbolism, Mukwazhi endeavors to
protect and empower all women who have endured abuse, violence, and marginalization.
Art Basel, which runs from 13 - 16 June 2024, is renowned for its celebration of groundbreaking contemporary art, provides a fitting platform for Mukwazhi's thought-provoking installation. Amidst the bustling atmosphere of the Swiss city of Basel, the Unlimited exhibition platform has become a focal point for monumental installations that transcend conventional artistic boundaries. Curated by Giovanni Carmine, director of the Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen in Switzerland, this year's edition of Unlimited boasts 76 projects and live performances by acclaimed artists such as Seba Calfuqueo, Resto Pulfer, and Anna Uddenberg.
What sets this year's event apart is the introduction of the People's Pick award, marking the first time visitors have been given the opportunity to select their favorite installation. As attendees immerse themselves in the diverse array of artistic expressions, anticipation builds for the announcement of the winning project at the weekend, following the tallying of votes. We truly hope this piece wins the award.
Mukwazhi's presence at Art Basel serves as a testament to the increasing profile and importance of contemporary female artists from Zimbabwe. Others include Portia Zvavahera, Kudzanai Violet Hwami and Virginia Chihota.
Art Basel also pubhlised an special feature on Mukwazhi titled: How I became an artist: Kresiah Mukwazhi which you can view here
