UNDONE: A Glimpse into the Zimbabwean Pavillion at the 2024 Venice Biennale, Italy

Every two years, the art world converges upon the enchanting city of Venice, Italy, for one of the most prestigious and eclectic celebrations of contemporary art: the Venice Biennale. From April 20 to November 24, 2024, amid the labyrinthine canals and historic architecture, the world witnesses a diverse array of artistic expressions from around the globe. Among the myriad pavilions showcasing their cultural narratives, the Zimbabwean Pavilion stood out as a vibrant tapestry woven with the threads of tradition, innovation, and resilience.


La Biennale di Venezia 2024 is curated by Brazil’s Adriano Pedrosa, director of MASP, the São Paulo Museum of Art under the theme “Stranieri Ovunque - Foreigners Everywhere”. The theme spotlighting artists from diverse backgrounds and marginalized groups. The Venice Biennale has long served as a platform for nations to showcase their artistic prowess and cultural identity on an international stage. For Zimbabwe, the opportunity to participate in this esteemed event is not only a testament to its rich artistic heritage but also a chance to share its stories with the world. The venue for this year is The Santa Maria della Visitazione Church, also known as della Pietà.


As visitors stepped into the Zimbabwean Pavilion, they were transported into a realm where tradition and modernity coalesce seamlessly. The pavilion's theme, "Undone," encapsulated the spirit of communalism and interconnectedness that lies at the heart of Zimbabwean culture. Through various mediums such as painting, sculpture, installation, and multimedia, the participating artists explored themes of identity, history, social justice, and environmental sustainability. The participating artists are Sekai Machache, Troy Makaza, Moffat Takadiwa, Gillian Rosselli, Kombo Chapfika, and Victor Nyakauru.

One of the highlights of the Zimbabwean Pavilion is the striking installation artworks by multimedia artist Moffat Takadiwa and painter Gillian Rosselli. The artworks on exhibition depicted scenes of the multilayered life in Zimbabwe, capturing the vibrancy of its people amidst the backdrop of socio-political challenges.


Beyond the artistic showcase, the Zimbabwean Pavilion also served as a platform for dialogue and exchange. Visitors will have the opportunity to engage with Zimbabwean artists and cultural ambassadors, gaining insights into the country's artistic landscape and its ongoing efforts to promote creativity and cultural expression.


At the 60th edition of Venice Biennale, the legacy of the Zimbabwean Pavilion continues to resonate, leaving an indelible mark on the global art scene. Through its powerful narratives and innovative expressions, Zimbabwe has reaffirmed its place as a cultural powerhouse, enriching the tapestry of human creativity for generations to come. In a world often fraught with division and war, the Venice Biennale serves as a beacon of hope, reminding us of the transformative power of art to bridge divides and foster understanding.
