Zimbabwean artist Portia Zvavahera’s new solo exhibition Zvakazarurwa (shona for "Revelations") opens today at Kettle’s Yard marks her first public gallery show in Europe, showcasing an extraordinary blend of artistic traditions and spiritual reflection. This follow her recent solo showcase at Fondation Louis Vitton titled Imba Yerumbidzo. Drawing from southern African culture, Christian iconography, and her personal dreams, Zvavahera’s paintings are layered with texture and color, employing her unique combination of techniques - painting, block printing, and batik stenciling.

The works on display weave together dreams, fantasies, and spiritual traditions, creating deeply personal, semi-autobiographical pieces that evoke powerful emotions and cultural depth. Zvavahera's mastery of merging these artistic forms offers a deeply immersive experience for viewers, inviting them into the spiritual world of the artist.

The exhibition, organized by Kettle's Yard in collaboration with the Fruitmarket in Edinburgh, has been supported by The Ampersand Foundation and David Zwirner Gallery. It is curated by Tamar Garb, and a new publication will accompany the show as it continues to Edinburgh in 2025.

Zvakazarurwa is a must-see for Zimbabweans based in the UK and those interested in the intersection of culture, spirituality and contemporary art.
