The arts have always played a vital role in the Olympics, and the 2024 Games in Paris continue this tradition with a strong emphasis on art and culture alongside sports. As the world’s fashion capital, Paris provides the perfect stage for this blend of creativity and competition. Home to renowned fashion schools like Parsons Paris and Studio Berçot, the city shapes global fashion trends through events such as Paris Fashion Week.
Today's opening ceremony, featuring icons like American rapper Snoop Dogg, French actor Laetitia Casta, and French rapper MC Solaar raising the Olympic Flame, celebrates the intersection of global cultures. This year, African teams are making significant fashion statements with their sports kits, combining traditional and contemporary styles.
Team Zimbabwe is participating in the 2024 Olympics in Paris with five athletes: Rutendo Nyahora (Marathon), Makanakaishe Charamba and Tapiwa Makarawu (Men's 200m), Steve Cox (Men’s Single Sculls Rowing), and Isaac Mpofu (Marathon). Team Zimbabwe kit is deisgned by Pfeka African, who specialise in sportswear as well as fan jerseys and replicas for Zimbabwean teams and clubs.
National teams worldwide have unveiled their sports kits, and African teams are leading the charge with bold traditional and contemporary styles. Sierra Leone’s kit, designed by LABRUM in collaboration with Adidas, features vibrant designs inspired by African heritage, including a cowrie shell symbolizing its historical wealth. Nigeria’s team, dressed by Actively Black, merges athleisure with traditional attire, showcasing the country's cultural pride. Uganda’s teams kit by IGC Fashion, with its colorful patchwork, reflects the team’s vibrant spirit.
Team Kenya’s kits, created with both local and international influences, incorporate national colors in striking, bold designs. Team South Africa’s sleek look, designed by Mr. Price, draws inspiration from local flora and landmarks, offering timeless elegance. Team Egypt’s outfits by Concrete feature light, stylish fabrics that reflect national pride with colors from the Egyptian flag.
Zimbabwe, with its burgeoning fashion industry, led by brands like Zuvva, Zimbabwean Sunshine, Rozebowl, Char Designz, Pfeka African and Haus of Stone, is poised to make a mark. Events like the Skeyi and Strobo Fabrik Party celebrate this community, with local brands showcasing their work on the runway. Designers such as New York-based Farai Simoyi, the king of Zimbabwe couture Tapfumanei Munenge, Natai Natai founder Cheryl Nyasha Johnson, and Fungai Muzorora among others, highlight the country’s creative talent. More engagement with some of these designers for the national team’s kit could showcase Zimbabwe’s unique style on the global stage and create a striking and trendy fashion-infused sports kit for Team Zimbabwe.
The Zimbabwe Olympics team could be one of the best-dressed teams at the Olympics, given the wealth of fashion talent in the country. As we celebrate Team Zimbabwe’s participation in the Olympics, we encourage them to bring home the medals.
